you need use
"root (hd0,6)", not "root (hd0,7)"
if your root partition is on /dev/hda7.

Thanks, that indeed does successfully re-install grub.

Unfortunately the behavior did not change.

During boot I get a message about loading stage 1.5, please wait.

Then it never comes back.

To get my machine usable for some other work, I booted a DOS floppy
and did a "fdisk /mbr". I'm now able to boot the Win2K partition
again.

I still want to get Linux on this box, but it will have to wait for
another day. I might try installing an older SUSE version on this
box. (It has never had any version of linux on it before, but I have
it loaded on several very similar machines.)

Thanks again for now,
Greg
