I have had the exact same experience since upgrading to SuSE 10.1.
ATI's 3D is dog slow and when I use the ATI driver the machine will
lock up most of the time when I exit the Graphical environment.

I have to switch to a virtual terminal, log in as root and change to
runlevel 3, then again back to runlevel 5.

Same hardware as you.
