I have had the exact same experience since upgrading to SuSE 10.1.
ATI's 3D is dog slow and when I use the ATI driver the machine will
lock up most of the time when I exit the Graphical environment.
I have to switch to a virtual terminal, log in as root and change to
runlevel 3, then again back to runlevel 5.
Same hardware as you.

Since upgrading to 10.1, and after all the trouble getting it going
properly, I notice that my 3D performance is not good at all. On my
notebook (m200 with shared ram) I get 460 odd FPS with glxgears (less
than I'm getting with the VESA driver with no hardware accel), where I
used to get (in SUSE 10.1 and gentoo) just under 1000 FPS).
Has anybody else seen this?
