Your problem is a standard issue with the fglrx driver: Switching to
other virtual terminals breaks the graphics (in any way, black
screens, corrupted output, Xserver crashes, crashed machines).

There is no solution, except for switching to a graphics card from
another vendor.

Believe me - you don't have a chance.

If SUSE 10.0 worked, the old driver probably worked better here
(regression). Unfortunately, you cannot build the old driver for the
newer kernel...

Ah well, I guess all I can do is wait for a driver update from ATI -
but taking from what I've experienced so far, I won't hold my breath
for speedy delivery. :( Thanks to everyone for your responses.
