If you are not using the proprietary driver from ATI that is most likely the problem.
Thanks again for the response. I've compiled and installed the 8.26.18 version of the x86 ATI radeon driver using the .run script from ATI's website. After a reboot, I ran the 'aticonfig --initial' command. At no point were any errors encountered.
