Because you don't seem to understand what you're paying for.
You're not paying for the software, you're paying for the convenience to have
it all packaged, tested and integrated into the distribution so it's easy to
use for you. You're paying for the service of keeping stuff updated to fix
security and functional bugs, and getting those updates in a ready-made, zero
effort format for you to apply.
See? It's not a ploy.
