Flattened my desktop and re-installed Suse 10.0 fresh, upgraded KDE to 3.5.2.
Set Klip board to have a single clipboard and all seems well.
Even www.topgear.com now displays properly under Konq.
No idea what had gone wrong so it was easier to just re-install the box.
