That is odd - I think you should open a bugreport. I have done a lot of
installs off a USB-stick, and the USB device is always listed
as /dev/sda in the partitioner.
What does "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" say? when you swap to a shell, can you
do "fdisk /dev/sda" ?
