Same here , I have had several versions of a program installed by smart
without deleting the previous version.

Also i don't like the layout of smart-gui,, It lists all the current
versions and you have to pick out which one you want, this is great for
an advanced function, but everyday upgrading it becomes very tedious.
I much prefer seeing  synaptic
