Hello,
I'm really new to Linux and have just installed OpenSuse 10.1. Most of it seems to be working OK, but I can't get connected with my USB DSL modem. It's a Sagem eagle chipset based modem and I'm trying to connect to Tiscali broadband in the UK. I've installed the modem drivers and they seem to be working OK - the modem lights come on and the /var/log/messages entry seems OK (but i might not be interpreting it correctly).
When you become old to Linux, you get yourself a router. I imagine you are dual booting and want to use windows as well. If this is the case, and you are using Linux, the support for ethernet cards is excellent, and it really is a no-brainer to get a router working with Linux.
The KInternet log says this:
SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.59 on linux-ts86. Status is: disconnected trying to connect to smpppd connect to smpppd Status is: disconnected Status is: lurking pppd[0]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded. pppd[0]: PPPoATM plugin_init pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded. pppd[0]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:0.38 pppd[0]: Renamed interface ppp0 to dsl0 pppd[0]: Using interface dsl0 Status is: lurking pppd[0]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500
I imagine this might be where it goes wrong. Go to www.adslguide.co.uk and ask there what the MTU should be. I think its 1478, but I am not sure. There is another popular value, 1430, [I think] sometimes recommended by tweakers.
pppd[0]: Couldn't set up demand-dialled PPP interface: Inappropriate ioctl for device Status is: lurking Status is: disconnected pppd[0] died: Fatal pppd error (exit code 1)
Does this give anyone a clue to what might be wrong? Do you need any other information?
