In the status meeting, on the topic of mirrors, I pointed out that our local mirror admin was confused about SUSE and openSUSE.
I was asked to cite the relevant parts of the thread as an example.
He basically points out: * ISOs are too big, users will download all 5 when they could have done an ftp install with half the data
It's already possible today to do a minimal installation with CD1 and a default GNOME / KDE installation with CD 1-3. Maybe we need to make this more visible within our Beta/RC announcements. We are of course very much interested in other / additional suggestions on how to fix this.
* the updates/patches are still in the old ftp.suse.com tree
This probably won't change in the short term, as they are used by the SUSE Linux retail version + the ftp.suse.com mirror "eco-system" is much stronger than the openSUSE.org one. What's the exact problem with this?
* on many mirrors, x86_64 packages are found somewhere under i386
I guess what you are referring to is the fact that we share the update trees with our bi- or even tri-arch products and those trees are located in pub/suse/i386/... This should be the same on all mirrors. But what's so problematic about it?
* x86_64 packages sometimes not mirrored due to their redundancy
Redundancy in terms of what? Regards Christoph
