Thanks for all the feedback.
If I choose to create a script based on skeleton what would I name it in the
corresponding rc.d directory? All the files that are currently there have a
letter and two numbers in the beginning of the name.

Take a look in /etc/rc.d for skeleton. Rename and edit it to suit.
Make that "... _copy_ and edit to suit."
