These instructions assume you're using KDE, which as Anders notes you did not indicate. If you use Gnome (or something else), then the procedure no doubt will differ from that described here. As far as I can recall, it's true of all the KDEs that have been extant for the past few years.
- Right-click the item's current desktop icon - Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu that results - View the "General" tab - Click on the current icon (which may be blank) immediately to the left of the item name
You are now presented with a icon chooser window. You can choose from the plenitude of icons offered there (by double clicking one of them) or select "Other" and the "Browse..." and navigate to a suitable icon file anywhere in your file system.
