You could use -ffourcc DX50 in the mencoder command. Only the fourcc is changed, but the file is still a compatible mpeg4 (divx, xvid, etc.)

Anyone with experience in DVD to divx know why on earth mencoder is insisting on encoding using the fourcc=FMP4 codec?
You cannot play files in windows when they are created this way, unless you install these huge codec bundles, and prey. The codec packs stuff you windows setup in the ground break all sorts of things. I have mentioned
before.
