I'm getting ready to embark on a series of projects working from my home
office that will take me 9 or 10 months to complete. I upgraded from
SuSE Pro 9.0 to SuSE Pro 9.2 about 13 months ago via a clean install.
I'm contemplating a similar upgrade to 10.0 before I really get started
on my projects but I'll need to be productive quickly and stay that way.
SuSE 9.2 has, however, been a disappointment in some ways, especially in
re: what works or does not work "out of the box."
1) I have both a CDRW and a Double layer DVD-RW. SuSE 9.0 recognized
both from the get-go and I had no problems using either. In SuSE 9.2,
even though the CDRW is on the fstab and in the configured hardware list
in YaST, I have been unable to use it and only can use the DVDRW.
2) I have an internal Zip 250 drive that I was able to use "out of the
box" with 9.0 but that is invisible so far in 9.2 (I received some
guidance recently on this problem that I'll be getting back to, soon). I
have lots of files on Zip100 disks that I will need to access.
3) I had no trouble using my USB 2.0 ports to connect a thumb drive in
9.0 but I haven't been able use my thumb drive, nor a USB MP3 player, in
9.2.
4) My scanner (HP Scanjet 5300C) has been an expensive paperweight in
both 9.0 and 9.2.
I don't like Windoze, but on the rare occasions that I boot into Win XP
Home SE, all of the above work out of the box and well.
What can I expect with 10.0? More of the same?
If I'm facing more of the same, I may try another distro (e.g. Ubuntu
5.10 that I run on my laptop) to see if I can find a more acceptable
solution before giving SuSE 10 a try.
TIA Kelly
