Cutting out the cruft, the above link says: "If you use gdm as displaymanager run gdmsetup as root, in the "general" tab select "Login a user automatically on first bootup" and select a user." I did exactly this (on suse pro 9.3) and found that this was already set. However, I've not been automatically logged in as the specified user *ever*.

This one says about the same thing, except that it gives a pointer to /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf, a good tip IMO.
