This is not true. There are a possible 4 primary partitions (hda1,
hda2, hda3, hda4). The extended partition may be any one of the primary
partitions, and you could also have more than 1).You are correct about
the logical partitions starting at /dev/hda5.
On my system, the extended partition is on /dev/hda2 on the first drive
and /dev/hdc1 on the second drive.
