Dear Sam, I think you are going about the problem backwards. There are 2 keyboard "systems" - Yes, I know, but that is the way it is. 1 Linux command mode (telinit 2 or 3): This is controlled from /etc/sysconfig/keyboard. In particular the following entries: KEYTABLE="us.map.gz" COMPOSETABLE="clear winkeys shiftctrl latin1.add" YAST_KEYBOARD="english-us-intl,pc105" 2 X-Windows --- INCLUDING X-Term windows --- these are controlled from /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You usually set this up either using Yast2 (Sax2) or by hand. I do it by hand, but you may find this tricky. Yast2 takes its initial Keyboard definition from 1) above. In particular, you will wish to ensure that you have something like: Section "InputDevice" # Sweex KM-2501 Keyboard PC-105 + 21 "InterNet" Keys Identifier "Keyboard[1]" Driver "kbd" # Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "Protocol" "Standard" Option "AutoRepeat" "400 50" # Option "Xleds" "" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" # Option "XkbKeycodes" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" # Max 4 layouts/variants - switch <ALT><SHIFT> # Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl,us_intl,gb,nl,de,fr,es,jp" # Option "XkbVariant" "basic,pc105euro,intl,,,," Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl,us_intl" Option "XkbVariant" "basic, nodeadkeys" Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle" Option "CustomKeycodes" "false" EndSection Where the definition of "XkbLayout" will want to match your Keyboard with the correct "XkbVariant" list. you will have to read some "man" pages and look in /usr/share/doc/packages/X11/**. Once you have all that working the way you want it, you can then define what one(s) you wish to use in KDE, Gnome, XFace, etc. It is a dependancy list. You have to do the base, before you try and build on it. If the base is not there, it will simply not work. I hope this helps. Dear Users,
Could someone explain to me why I am not successful at making the Dvorak keyboard layout stick? I went to the [KDE Control Center, Regional & Accessibility, Keyboard Layout], and made sure "Dvorak" was the only keyboard layout available under "Active Layouts" on the right window (left window reads "Available Layouts"). And I still get the QWERTY layout.... Not sure why.
I'm currently running Suse Linux Professional 9.
Thank you for your help.
Sam
