I've not tried it, but how about having impress running in slideshow mode on
desktop 1, and whatever video player on desktop 2? Use Ctrl+F1 / Ctrl+F2 to
switch between them (in KDE at least).
Doesn't minimize impress, but effect is the same as far as I can see.
