I was hoping to be able to solve this without a clean install.
The system involved does have a IDE CD player, and a external DVD on
firewire. I have SuSE 10 on DVD...
Would it be possible to make a bootable CD, use that to boot, but once
the install starts load the necessary modules for firewire, and then
use the DVD as a source?
