G'day, list. Here's my current issue: at the moment, I'm using a "drive box" holding several IDE HDs with interface cards that let them be interfaced to via FireWire. I've been using one as the primary, and the second as backup, on my XP box, with a daily scheduled xcopy batchfile. Now, as I continue my migration from Windows to Linux, I *could* just duplicate this same process with rsync, but... I'm curious about RAID. I understand the general idea of how RAID operates, but have absolutely *no* background in it. So what I'd like to find is a good guide, maybe even a full-size book, designed to take a user from Utter Ignorance to Moderately Competent in setting up, running, and recovering RAID. An Admin-level guide is probably too much, but I need something better than a pre-digested "push this button, push that button" flowchart -- in order to really absorb what I'm trying to learn, I need something that explains a reasonable amount of the *why* behind each step. I also need something that explains the differences between different RAID types and can help me figure out which is best for my purposes. (and, of course, the whole thing should be applicable to SuSE -- but that should go w/o saying, eh? :) ) So, does anyone have any recommendations?
