It helps to know what you have setup the SuSE 10 on your ThinkPad A31.

Some ideas:

Did you upgrade or do a fresh install?

fsck your partitions and make sure you did not pick up some bad sectors, 
which usually end up in the superblocks and stuff.

I am not familiar with the A31 but when you leave the box alone, it does 
a automated search of text so you can easy-search it. If you have some 
fraked sectors, that alone will make your day.
