This is my first time going all out with any Linux distro. I ran what was Mandrake about a year ago and never used it much, but I like SUSE much better. Do I need to run an AV program and spyware protection? These may sound like dumb questions, but I have no idea how well protected SUSE is on the Net. Thanks
Unless you're running SuSE (ha!) as root, you should have little to fear. I wrote up a little blurb on this on my site.
It was quite fun a few months ago at work. While some virus was running rampant on several thousand of our workstations and dozens of servers, my laptop and a few of my SLES servers were sitting happy and unaffected.
About the only time you need AV in Linux is when you're running a mail or file server for Windows users. Even then, it's for their protection, not yours.
