AddDefaultCharset default?

I just had a problem with utf8 and an 9.0 apache2 server.
I don't know is the problem is still here, so I quote it.
the default AddDefaultCharset value of apache 2 on suse 9.0 is at iso-8859-1.
This was probably of no consequence two years ago, but now than suse 10.0 is mostly (if not all) utf8, this led to problem.
the answer is only to have "AddDefaultCharset off".
this is confusing because this value has precedence upon the meta tag of the page, so the display is not that waited in the source.
