Very well put. I believe this has increased with YaST's increasing functionality. Back before YaST2, YaST was actually pretty limited, so the move away from full-hand-holding kind of happened by itself when your own requirements increased. Now YaST2 has so much functionality, that I suspect many people can go on for quite some time before having to delve into editing files themselves. Which is good for some, and bad for some.
