Ok. 1st, go to the ATI website and get the linux installer (it's a *.run
file). Then go to init 3/run level 3 as root and run the installer
(/.ait-installer-<current version>.<blah blah>.run) and follow the installer
walkthrough.

NOW! here's the important part. The last thing the installer will ask you is
to write out the file in /etc/X/ as "XF86Config-4" DON'T DO IT. I can't
remember exactly but you'll get to a point where it asks you where you want
the file saved. I saved mine to my /root folder, and you want to save the
file as "XF86Config" (without the *-4 suffix).

Next go to /etc/X/ and issue the following command:
(without the "#")
# mv XF86Config XF86Config-orig (or *.bkup, or *.old, or pick you flavor).
This way you'll have a basic and working X config file if you have problems.
Now copy the XF86Config file from the /root folder to /etc/X as follows:
(in /root)
# cp XF86Config /etc/X/XF86Config

Then issue # init 5 and see if you login screen doesn't show up. If not then
cut/paste the output of the X error log file and post it so we can look at
what's happening.

HTH, Curtis.
