Sorry for the top post.
Make sure the laptop is shut down from where ever it has been
before having it join the tux jjh workgroup. This means *turned off* not just *suspended* from where ever it was last connected (like a home network, etc). Unless it is shut down, the laptopd browse list will remain in memory and when it attempts to join the domain where tux is, the browser war begins. The only way to flush the browse list on a windows box is to shoot it in the head (i.e. turn it off and then back on)

I have 11 Windows XP Pro workstations and 2 Windows XP Pro laptops in my network, tux is the samba server, dns server and mail server. Samba is configured as PDC with: workgroup = JJH server string = TUX os level = 65 preferred master = yes domain master = yes local master = yes wins support = yes There is no other windows server within the network, although some workstations offer shares and/or printers. Domain logon, roaming profiles, shares etc. everything works just fine. Browsing of shares works nicely.
As soon as one laptop (laptopd) comes on-line, I start getting nmb problems. That laptop announces itself as being the master browser, whereupon tux stops supplying browsing information. After a while, tux wins out and is the master browser again. Whilst laptopd is the master browser, not all available shares are being listed, and some non-existing shares are listed, network connections are very slow during this time.
I was playing around with OS level (up to os level = 255), no change. I disabled browsing on the laptop (control panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer management -> Computer Browser Properties) from automatic to disabled, also not producing the desired result.
Here is an extract of the log.nmb [2005/10/18 16:14:13, 0] nmbd/nmbd_become_lmb.c:become_local_master_stage2 (396) Samba name server TUX is now a local master browser for workgroup JJH on subnet 192.168.1.10 [2005/10/18 16:25:44, 0] nmbd/nmbd_incomingdgrams.c:process_local_master_announce(311) process_local_master_announce: Server LAPTOPD at IP 192.168.1.49 is announcing itself as a local master browser for workgroup JJH and we think we are master. Forcing election. [2005/10/18 16:25:44, 0] nmbd/nmbd_become_lmb.c:unbecome_local_master_success(149) Samba name server TUX has stopped being a local master browser for workgroup JJH on subnet 192.168.1.10
What do I try next? I had a good look on the web and I have addressed the two possible causes (os level and browser on laprop), unfortunately to no avail. I assume that this may be some Windows XP settings on the laptop, because 12 machines behave well, and one throws a spanner into the works.
Any clues welcome
Peter
