As the heading suggests, as far as I am concerned HAL is not fixed. If you remove the fix - the file nosync.fdi given as the temp. fix for opensuse - then any USB "stick" is as slow as grass growing.
I just did a test on my laptop. I created a 400 MB file and began copying it to my USB 2.0 drive. I immedately noticed no speed increase from earlier this week. I was getting 120 - 140 Kb/Sec with an estimated time of completion of 1:20:00.
