While your sitting with damn small I have a similar issue with suse10,
My res is also at 1280x1024 but my fonts are massive, I have also played
in the xorg.conf and had no luck..

There is an easy way for you. One would be to configure a geneic monitor
1280x1024 @ 60 - 75 hz or use kde control center in the themes section
and change the font sizes or your theme..

Which ever work best for you..
