x or ! in shadow field of /etc/passwd

Anyone understand what x and ! mean
in the shadow field of /etc/passwd and /etc/group?
A bit of googling suggests that:
x => a valid encrypted passwd in a shadow file
* => no encrypted password => fail all logins
! is a synonym for x
But that doesn't explain why there is a such
a random sprinkling of x and ! in SuSE's passwd
nor what they are doing in /etc/group?
Long Puzzled,

No matter how much you pay for software,
you always get less than you hoped.
Unless you pay nothing, then you get more.
