There is no memory hogging. It is just that the scanner is not found some times. In previous versions, when a device plugged to the USB bus failed, first we unplugged and replugged the device; and if it failed, a "rchotplug restart" would do the trick. That script (rchotplug) is no longer there (9.3). There is a "/etc/init.d/boot.coldplug", however.
