Please file a bug on the smart tracker, or have a nice chat with the author, Gustavo Niemeyer. He's very often in #smart on freenode (IRC). He's a very nice guy, so be kind to him and he'll be helpful ;)
I placed a wish on the tracker. As I wrote there, this is non-essential but very convenient. Praps this conversation was best for the smart mailing list, but it's got such a low throughput it seems my questions will be answered faster and more thoroughly here.

That would be a little more complex to do with smart, as it completely abstracts the underlying package management.
