Fair enough, so it's not just me then.

This time, I booted the install CD, went to the Ctrl-Alt-F2 screen
which has a root prompt and did:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hde1 bs=1GB count=150

to each drive. Hopefully it'll all come out clean this time!
