I have had problems that sound very similar to yours.

I found that the only way I can get this to work, but it works
consistently for me now, is to start the printing manager, then put it
into adminstrator mode. From here, I can make changes. If however, I
make the changes and am prompted for authorization at that point, it
_always_ rejects my credentials.
