One of your startup scripts took a hit or the binary files for tty setup took a hit.
Inspect and see how the filesystem is. Which filesystem is it? Did you fsck it yet?

OS: SuSE 9.3 Pro
Friday night, there was an extended power outage which exhausted the UPSes
forcing a shutdown. When this system (running on Dell 600SC hardware) came
back up, there were no logins on tty1 - tty6 and several processes failed
to start (cups, postfix, postgrey, for example). These are all configured
to start on system boot. KDE appears to work and I can login in via ssh.
If I attempt to manually start a getty (e.g., mingetty tty2), the shell
session goes away. tty2 - tty6 are blank and tty1 has the bootup stuff.
I did a system repair from the SuSE media to no avail so I restored the
root filesystem from the previous week's master backup (/home was not
restores to avoid losing email, etc. received since the last backup).
However the problem persists.
I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot, much less fix this problem.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thank you,
Lucky Leavell
