I had similar problem in the past. One of the writers behaved that
way. It was doing under windows as well, and ended up to be a bad
device. First try to see if DMA is enabled for the devise, and if so,
disable it.
Anyway, reloading drivers will not help, as it seems there are some
low level initialization involved. With mine, even reboot did not
help, I had to shut down the machine and power it on again in order to
get over the lock. So, YMMV :)
