A few comments spring to mind

1. Don't run sendmail unless you *really* know what you're doing. This is why
the gods gave us postfix

2. Never overwrite any important files without doing backups

3. Never do anything at all without doing backups

4. Which version of suse are you using?

5. Where did you get the linux.mc? The one I'm looking at in 9.3 doesn't have
a relative link to cf.m4, it has a full path to /usr/share/sendmail/m4/cf.m4.
Was this something you downloaded from the net?

6. Don't be surprised. Always assume any operation will fail, and prepare for
it. This isn't a linux thing, it's a life thing. Expect the worst, then you
can only be pleasantly surprised
