If your ISP is providing a modem with a RJ45 connector then you are OK;
what you need is an ethernet router and not a modem. DLink/Linksys
entry level units will fit your needs.

In my experience with ISPs in India, they tend to support one vendor one
product. Unfortunately, a few have chosen modems that connect to the
USB port only; needless to say no support for Linux.

I have a DLink 504 and 614 that I cannot use to connect to my ISP
(incumbent Telco). The DSL signal from the splitter comes over a copper
pair with a RJ11 connector v/s a RJ45 that I have seen in the US.
Rather than investing in an equipment that is only good on the ISP's
network, I ended up renting the DSL modem/router from the ISP.

Bottom line, the equipment at your end depends very much on how the
access is delivered to you.

It is easier to change the specification to fit the program than vice
versa.
