If you're using KDE you might try to disable aRts in the KDE Control Center. I haven't had problems with aRts but some people do. Perhaps disabling it solves those problems.
I would recommend you Kaffeine and Amarok instead, anyway. They integrate much better in KDE and Amarok is 100 light-years better than XMMS.

Juraj, Try restarting the alsa daemon. I had issues with alsa and NLD9, it took a few attempts to kill it and restart it, but once I did the sound was great. Regards, Andy
