James, How do you quit kmix when you close it? If you just click on the close gadget in the upper right of the window, then you are probably not quitting it, just closing the window. Naturally since it hasn't quit, it will start upon your next boot. So first thing, quit it from the menu. If you have been doing that, I think your next move will be to check your config file. It will be located in $HOME/.kde/share/config/ directory as "kmixrc".
