/var/log/messages shows that the wrong modules.dep is searched for:

Jun 10 08:50:45 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't open dependencies
file /lib/modules/2.4.21-286-athlon/modules.dep (No such file or direc

Fortunately, switching back to k_athlon-2.4.21-286 was easy.
Has anybody encountered the same problem?
Or is it just me?

On an identical machine, the upgrade worked perfectly.
So it looks like the problem was caused by some special
problems on this _one_ machine;
the reported problem should not occur somewhere else.

Sven

If the modules exist, "depmod -ae k_athlon-2.4.21-291" will create modules.dep.
