After 9.2->9.3 problem with ppp0

On a machine with no local network and only dialup connection to
internet, I used rpm to upgrade from 9.2->9.3 No difficulties, except
now external modem can't connect to isp, apparently because ppp0 (manual start,
says boot.msg) is lost.
Using kinternet, /var/adm/messages records only
ifup-ppp: failed to bring interface ppp0 up
Using wvdial,
...
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: ennett
(above repeated 5x)
--> Disconnecting ...
--> The PPP daemon has died: Authentication error ... (exit code
19)
Through all this smpppd is running.
Replacing 9.2's etc and /usr/sbin's permissions with those from copied
from 9.1, yields same result.
The wvdial diagnostic shows something is wrong: "ennett" is my user
name stripped of first character, and I don't think it should be
listed at all.
An internal slmodem exists, tied to ppp1, but I'm not using that
modem. Should I physically remove it?
Ideas?
