Hi! I have a friend who just bought himself a used server. It had SLES 9 installed, but a corrupt disk made him (or actually it was me) reinstall it. The problem is that as it is a used server, he has no service agreement with SuSE, and thus no login/password for the update servers.
That stuff was "hidden" in plaintext in /var/lib/YaST/you/password If you've lost it, you've lost it.
Oh he lost it allright..
Is there a "public" anonymous server to use for SLES upgrades available,
No, no local mirrors either, that's the choke-point for licensing.
or does he either have to get a license from SuSE or install 9.2/9.3 instead?
Yep.
Ah well.. Time to snoop for another good server Linux then. Too much flames on 9.3 for my taste. (Yes i am a chicken when it comes to customer system) The migration to 9.2 was bad enough. I DID get through it, and finally got a 9.2 working without too many quirks, but it was a smaller nightmare.. As much as i love SuSE, its getting more and more problematic to install. I have used it since 6.2, and have not strayed once (aside from experimenting) My own network is homogenous (so far), but a few IRIX boxes are sneaking up on me :) As for my friends/customers server. He doesn't really care, "As long as it works"
Frankly, if only 2 years of patches is enough I'd go with 9.3, it's much more fully-featured. Does "no Firefox" ring alarm bells for you? I'm installing SuSE Pro RPMs into SLES9 to fill the deficiencies and I usually have to go back to the 9.1 version before it loads. 8^(
I dont care for firefox on this box as it is a pure server. But for a workstation sure...

Internet Explorer is fine for downloading Firefox, but after that....
