What's the IP address of the router? Typical address of a home rtr out of the box would be 192.168.0.1 or something like that.
192.168.10.1
What's the IP address of the new SuSE 9.2 box? Try ifconfig
127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
127.anything is loopback. Look at the eth0 or other interface. If lo is the only interface you have, then SuSE doesn't recognize your NIC! All machines have a 127.0.0.1 or some 127. address, even if they don't have a NIC. It's the address that's alway reachable, even if the other network hardware is down. It can be used to test if TCP/IP is installed and more or less working. But it's not a "real" address. It won't be able to reach a 192.168 class C address or any other. Look again at ifconfig-- any more interfaces listed? Eth0? Eth1?
Ping the router from the SuSE box. Does that work? My router is at a different address than yours, so I did this: SuSE # ping -c 5 172.20.0.1
You should get 5 replies if you do this. If you get DESTINATION HOST UNREACHABLE or some other error, then the NIC or wiring is bad.
Network is unreachable.
It is a brand new ABIT motherboard, sure hope the nic isn't doa.
Maybe not-- go into the BIOS at bootup- integrated perihperals or whatever that menu is called-- look for the network interface card. Make sure it's turned on in the BIOS and make sure the INT assigned to it is reasonable.
Try a different cable. Make sure you didn't grab a crossover cable
Cable questions are moot at this point, you have no NIC yet.
It was a known-good cable but I just swapped it -- no change.
The pattern here has been green at both ends = good, yellow/orange is bad.
