Would information from YaST Hardware info app about the Network Card, Network Interface, or PCI/ ABIT Ethernet Controller help to lead us to the source of the problem?
Probably- I don't know for sure. I'm a newbie with SuSE, just pretty skilled with networks.
192.168.10.1
What's the IP address of the new SuSE 9.2 box? Try ifconfig
127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
That was inet:
Look again at ifconfig-- any more interfaces listed? Eth0? Eth1?
Nope, just inet (listed above) and inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope :Host
Maybe not-- go into the BIOS at bootup- integrated perihperals or whatever that menu is called-- look for the network interface card. Make sure it's turned on in the BIOS and make sure the INT assigned to it is reasonable.

Hey! Check and see if you have the firewall on and blocking everything!

Doesn't SuSE install a firewall? check its configuration.

yes youre right, the firewall was not set to let anything thru ! BUT, thats only half the problem. the mobo seems to need its own onboard-ether linux driver. ive found it on the mobo cd, and got it onto floppy, but the instructions seem difficult. how am i supposed to "compile" it and install it into linux ? ive never used linux before. i will run ifconfig as soon as back on that machine. thanks :)

Id try without the other driver, first. Modern linux distros should have builtin support for most ethernet devices.

already tried with firewall open. it did flickeringly get the router setup page, but then dropped it. cant get web pages
that mobo is Abit kv8pro VIA ether controller what is the procedure rindi for "compiling" the driver ?
Humor me-- go back into the BIOS and DISABLE the on-board NIC, just for a test. Find an old basic 3Com 3c905B or C or whatever you have laying around and poke it into the PCI bus. See if that works. **Hey! SUSE-E list! Are some on-board NICs problematical for SuSE??
Thanks! & 73, doc kd4e
