I built myself a file server around Christmas time based on three 300G Maxtor ATA133 drives. These drives have 3 year warranties, atypically long for IDE drives. The system has pretty much been on 24 hours since it was built. The drives are in Vantec Vortex hard drive coolers which are in turn mounted in a Nexus Breeze case. The file server is easily the quiestest operating PC in the house. The drives in other computers/laptops I have are a mixed bag -- some Maxtor, some Seagate, some Samsung, some Western Digital. I may be just lucky, but I haven't had an outright drive failure since around 1996 -- that was a 2G Connor SCSI drive. Since the time of that tragic event I've learned how to keep things organized and backed up. On Tuesday 05 April 2005 22:49, Nick Jones wrote:
I use a mixture of these drives and haven't had any problems with either. They are both quiet and reliable for me. I have a friend who swears by Seagate hard drives, claiming they are quieter and more reliable than anything else. I've never tried a Seagate so I wouldn't know, but he is a professional web programmer who builds his own custom PC's for his work, so I trust his judgement.

I also have used a Western Digital drive but it was even noisier than the Maxtors. Plus, the device I had it on burned out shortly after I installed it (maybe just a coincidence, but I don't know). Anyone care to recommend either of these or maybe some other brand?
