SUSE 9.3 [sic], KDE 3.4. This worked fine in 9.2.
I see the same thing in 9.3. The kscd.kcfg file defines the config setting, so I'm not immediately sure why it's not visible in the config, I'd have to look at the source, but I think you can get around it by adding [GENERAL] DirectPlayback=true in the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/kscdrc
