I'm trying to establish Firebird on SuSE 9.1 and have struck a blank (brain that is)
1. I'm logged in as root 2. /etc/sysconfig/firebird is a text file which I "found". It contains "START_FIREBIRD="yes" 3. ps -A shows no indication of firebird as a running service
Why is it so?
Any tips appreciated
Thanks
Mike
What version do you have ? I have 1.5.0.4290-0 Superserver installed. There was an init-script included (see /opt/firebird/misc).
Konrad - the version Yast claims is installed is 1.5.1.4481-0 and I have the /opt/firebird/misc/firebird.init.d.suse in my hot little hand - not that I know precisely what to do with it :(
Maybe I should link a special filename to it?
Mike
Make a link, or copy the file to /etc/init.d/ Maybe rename it to firebird, whatever you like. Then go in Yast, System, Runlevel Editor. You should see the name of the file in the list. Select it, and activate it (don't know what's on the button, because my version is in Dutch). Now Firebird should be running. Finalise Runlevel Editor, and Firebird should start running at every boot.
Fantastic - Thanks Konrad
I came across a very useful page http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/595.html which helped me understand some of what you said. Here are the steps I had to go through to get the installed Firebird running ... 1 I looked inside opt/firebird/misc/firebird.init.d.suse. There is a comment that it was really init.d/firebird just as you indicated (above). There is also an instruction to link it to /usr/sbin/rcfirebird 2 When I tried to link it, I discovered that /usr/sbin/rcfirebird already exists. So I decided to try the Runlevel Editor. 3 In Runlevel Editor Firebird would not start. It complained that it could not open /opt/firebird/isc_guard1.svn for writing. 4 I went looking and found isc_guard1.linux in that directory. It was zero bytes in length, owned by firebird and the group is firebird. 5 I made a isc_guard1.svn link to isc_guard1.linux 6 Back in Runlevel Editor Firebird now starts OK. I'll do some tests and when everything is working fine I'll download the latest rpm and install that. Thanks again Mike
