IMHO: I always prefer a clean install. On my system, I have one partition
with 9.0 and another with 9.2. This way, if I forgot something, I might
have it online.
Additionally, I generally set up my systems with a separate /home
and /usr/local. This way when you upgrade, you don't affect user
directories or locally installed elements.

When I set up 9.2, I found that my email program, sylpheed claws would
neither buil;d from source nor run. So I simply symlinked the 2 libraries
to point to the older SuSE 9.0 libraries. This gives me some time to figure
out why I am unable to build it.

If you do not have a separate /home (I consider this very important), you
can use GNU Parted (YaST/System/Partitioner) to resize existing partitions,
and add more.
