I am trying to troubleshoot a SuSE File Server (9.x) that kept kicking samba connections off -- the connection would drop and then return a few seconds later. A scrolling of /var/log/messages reveals this ominous looking bit of gibberish, starting roughly the same time that these dropped connections began, and repeating every two to five minute:
Feb 8 12:02:48 linux kernel: hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Feb 8 12:02:48 linux kernel: hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=6689920, sector=6689919
Feb 8 12:02:48 linux kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 6689919
Feb 8 12:02:48 linux kernel: ReiserFS: hdb1: warning: vs-13070: reiserfs_read_locked_inode: i/o failure occurred trying to find stat data of [7863 8447 0x0 SD]
In a fun twist, one of the windows users on the network has been complaining of strange behavior where when she tries to save a particular file it "goes nuts" -- unable to save the file, it was doing something (they had a hard time describing this) where it creates a lot of versions with more and more tildes added on.
I can never resist rebooting a machine, so I figured "heck, reboot." and got this error:
fsck.reiserfs /dev/hda4 failed (status 0x10) Run manually!
trying to run fsck.reiserfs /dev/hda[1-3] generated no errors or information whatsoever.
I am somewhere between alarmed and confused.
thanks,
amanda
