I haven't really tested for speed. My problem, prior to the 2.6.10 series, was that konqueror and other graphical programs couldn't access the shares through the mount points, although the command line and non graphical programs like Midnight Commander could.
For example, I mount tow windows shares as
/home/mikecoan/mnt/WinServer/Pubdata and
/home/mikecoan/mnt/WinServer/Users
If I use konqueror or Open Office or Thunderbird or Kmail to access those shares, I cannot. Under konqueror i can access the shares by
smb://192.168.1.1/Pubdata and
smb://192.168.1.1/Users
As i said, Midnight Commander and command line access the shares fine. i can cd to /home/mikecoan/mnt/WinServer/Pubdata with no problem and access the files and directories there. This problem is fixed if I use one of the 2.6.10 kernels from the apt repository. Unfortunately, I cannot compile the nvidia driver for those kernels.
Your friend might try lists.samba.org. The linux-cifs-client mailing list has lots of info and god posts on cifs. At least I think they are good posts because they are beyond me :) Steven French of IBM, who seems to write most of the cifs code, posts there frequently.

I am running SuSE 9.2 Pro on my home and office machines. The home machine is where I do my trial and error.
I need to mount shares from a Windows 2003 Server running active directory. I mount them using CIFS, using entries in /etc/samba/smbfstab. Changes to the cifs code in the 2.6.10 kernel make this work much nicer than in the 2.6.8-24 kernel I am using on my office
Have you solved the slowness issue of 9.2. A friend of mine is trying
to use an ABIT mb with VIA chips and Adaptec UltraWide2 and can not make
it run better than 8.2.
He is finding lots of complaints but no solutions on google.
I use single processor so I can not replicate his issue.
